How To Choose Child-Safe Shutters, Blinds & Shades

Child safe shutters
Child and pet strangulation is a real problem with window blinds and shade cords. Even when tied up, the cords can be dangerous. As a parent, you probably know that the child strangulation warning label on window treatments is not enough.

Whether you intend to replace old window treatments or are buying them for the first time, you’ll be looking at some child-safe shutters, blinds, or shades.

Here are some of the best options for homes with kids and pets.

Safest For Children: Shutters

Shutters are the safest window treatments for homes with kids and pets. They don’t have cords at all, and there are no small pieces that can break off and get swallowed.

You should replace shutters made prior to 2001. Those made today are safer. Be sure you choose a reliable manufacturer because many are flimsily made. The louvers break or crack more readily.

  • Replace old shutters if made before 2001
  • Choose durable shutters of quality construction
  • Don’t buy shutters from other countries

Window Blinds & Shades

Everyone loves window blinds, they go with any type of decor. And shades are great for light filtering and privacy. However, the corded blinds and shades are not child safe. Go with the following alternatives.

Safest:

  • Motorized blinds & shades – check Hunter Douglas PowerView Motorization System
  • Easy lift blinds & shades – check Hunter Douglas LiteRise Cordless shades
  • Look for U.S. custom made blinds and shades certified as safe

There are no dangling cords on motorized and easy-lift window treatments.

Child-Safe News From The Window Covering Manufacturer’s Association

The WCMA released a new window covering safety standard in January of 2018 to protect children and pets from strangulation. While the standard will go into effect on January 9, 2019, there are already custom-made blinds and shades available which comply with the standards.

They are requiring that all stock products sold in stores and online to be cordless or have inaccessible cords.

Child-Safety regulation only applies to U.S. & Canada. Many custom made blinds and shades are already child safe
